And so off we are on the 4 hours flight from Buenos Aires to El Calafate.
We are flying over endless emptiness of the steps, towards the land of Patagonia on the far South edge of the continent at the front doors of Antarctica.
The name Patagonia has always sounded like magic to me and out of all the destinations in South America this is the place where I always wanted to go. That´s probably because of the amazing mountain sceneries that I´ve seen on the pictures, gigantic sharp rock found nowhere else in the world.
(another) small travelling dream comes true
After 3 hours on the plane we can see the Andes far far away on the horizon and then towards our landing in El Calafate we can admire Monte Fitz Roy with its glorious shapes.
On our way from the airport to El Chalten we have most the amazing views on Monte Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre and other rocky towers. One of the most spectacular mountain views I´ve ever had in my life lasted short enough that I didn´t manage to capture it on the picture through the bus window before clouds covered the peaks. I have never been so angry about not having a few second longer, so angry about not having asked the bus driver to stop for a minute. The clouds never let us see the peaks again over the next few days....
As we couldn´t do anything to chase the clouds away we moved on to yet another jaw dropping wonder of nature... 35 kilometers long Perito Moreno glacier, one of the few advancing glaciers on the South American continent, a giant indeed.
Next stop: Puerto Natales and Chilean side of Patagonia (famous Torres del Paine National Park)
